Board the daily shuttle at all major bus stops in Myoko and also Lotte Arai Resort. A great chance to explore the Joetsu area and discover some amazing shops, restaurants and culture as well as visit the brand new Umigatari aquarium in Noetsu.

A great place for lunch and to buy presents for friends and family.
There are numerous restaurants here and omiyage (gift) shops which sell Japanese snacks and traditional items.

Restaurants include ramen, sushi, coffee & cake, Italian and gyudon (beef & rice bowl).

Many restaurants, traditional stores and cultural areas can be found around the main area outside Takada station. You can  experience Japanese tea making and calligraphy in some of the stores. There is much to explore in this area of Joetsu.

This area is also home to many culturally significant sites. You can find the oldest movie theatre in Japan called Sekai Kan (it still shows movies), as well as Ryotei Ukiyo which is a high-class restaurant that serves traditional Japanese cuisine and is over 140 years old. A great place for lunch.

Its a great idea to pick up a local area map from the train station or tourist office.

Umigatari Joetsu Aquarium was fully rebuilt and reopened in 2018. It is now the best aquarium in Niigata and one of the few places in Japan where you can see Beluga whales and great numbers of Magellanic penguins. One of the major highlights is the Magellanic penguin area where the birds freely roam. You can even participate in feeding time! A great place for the whole family to visit on your day off from the slopes.
